One of the many things that I observe in the debate between young-earth and old-earth creationists, is the constant appeal to the works of past theologians. People are constantly appealing to this church father, or that medieval theologian, in the hopes that they will justify their belief in an old or young earth.
Old-earth creationists have pointed to Justin Martyr, Origin, Augustine, and others from the first four centuries after Christ, as believing in an old earth. At the same time, young-earth creationists have defended these past Christians as believing in a young-earth. Both cases look strong, leading me to believe that these men were seeking the truth, and may not have reached a conclusion.
Why Does it Matter?
Why do people seek out the beliefs of Christian that have gone before us? A Christian who is struggling with these issues may need the support, so that they can make up their minds one-way or the other. Or, a person may simply be trying to be as thorough as possible before committing to a choice.
People today have been conditioned to fully research their beliefs. This is good. But in many cases, I get the distinct impression that people will not commit to a belief, unless they can find a crutch to lean on…fellow Christians, past and present, who believe the same thing. We must move beyond this “crutch” mentality, and decide issues for ourselves.
Be Decisive!
But there eventually comes a time when the believer must make a choice of their own. How important is this search for support from the Christians that have gone before us? Not important at all. In the end, we must rely upon our own conclusions, based on the evidence that we have. In fact, with advances in science, and new archeological discoveries, we are in a better position to decide this issue than any of the church fathers that have gone before us.
Geology as a science did not really get going until the 1800’s, therefore none of this scientific data was available to these past theologians. What would Justin Martyr have decided, if he had the evidence we have today?
I’m not saying to ignore the church leaders of the past, but I am saying that we have much more evidence than they ever had, and can reach our own conclusions. Don’t be afraid to come to your own conclusions about creation and the Bible.
I have concluded that the earth is 4.5 billion years old. If you believe that the earth was created in six 24-hour days, great! Hold fast to that belief. If you have evidence and believe that the days of creation are each 3.76 seconds each, great!
Conclusion
Each of us has the evidence in the Bible and God’s creation. We don’t need to appeal to the theologians of the past to support our belief…they didn’t have the same evidence that we have, due to scientific and archaeological discoveries…why then are we seeking to trust in their views which were based on limited evidence?
You have the evidence yourself, and it’s up to you to come to your own conclusions.

I can’t understand myself
You’re all I think about
When I’m awake
Even when I’m asleep
I’m crazy for you
I just can’t explain
You’re always on my mind
You’re driving me insane
You keep me awake
Up until midnight
You keep me asleep
‘Cause you’re always in my dreams

My main goal by writing this article is to stir the creativity that each one of you has inside you, maybe it has been sitting dormant for quite sometime or you feel you just don’t have the time….my suggestion is to make time and lets wake up the creativity bones hidden deep inside you! Perhaps your thinking, I already sell BOR products…But are you happy with just placing a few CD’s on the back table or a few of your books? Why not utilize ALL your resources?
So, sit back and relax, if you want, you can print this out and go relax on the couch and read it, or take it outside and get some fresh air and get away from your computer for a little bit…it will do you some good!
Is it possible? Most speakers think doing free engagements is a waste of time, money and energy…BUT those that think this may not be using all their resources. Many speakers think that they can jump right into the paying or even high paying engagements, but lets not get ahead of ourselves, first focus on the easy to get engagements: The free ones! All speakers will do them, all speakers have done them, and all speakers will continue to do them.
Now that we are focusing in on only free engagements, let’s see how we can benefit from them:
Back of the Room Product Ideas:
Let Your Products Work For You!
Your Products: Oh yes….the speaker’s products! Now I know every speaker either has created a product of their own or you have been thinking about creating your own products but have not implemented them into your program.
Don’t be terrified by the words: Create your own products! This is a simple process to do and does not need to be complicated in anyway. Some people think, “Create my own products, no way that will take forever!” No it doesn’t and I want everyone who is reading this to get yourself in the right train of thought here: You can create products quickly, easily and they can be very profitable for you! Say that to yourself a few times and then continue reading…..
When people think of Back of the Room products they think of books and CD’s, but BOR products can consist of a wide range of products and you can also even endorse your services if you are a consultant/mentor as well as a speaker.
Product Ideas for You to Create:
•Books:
A professional speaker and authoring a book almost always go hand in hand, so if you haven’t written a book yet, put it on your “to do list”. Authoring a book doesn’t mean it has to be a 300 – 500 page novel, but a simple book allowing your expertise to be recognized!
•Workbooks
•Tip-Booklets:
(Hold on…don’t pass this one up. Tip-booklets can be created on a shoestring budget and sell like “hot-cakes” because of the valuable information and inexpensive price tag.
•CD’s:
A must have, these sell very well for almost any speaker if you have them priced competitively and if you can, sell them in sets. You could possibly sell one CD with the option of downloading additional ones via your website, this is a good way to get them to your site and get them involved with your info products. We will discuss informational products later in our soon to be released new report.
•Reminder Tip Cards:
(These are about the size of a postcard) they recap the strong points of your presentation or can have some motivational sayings on them. You can either give these away or add them to your product line, either way don’t forget to have your contact information on it. Hint: Having them laminated will give them a professional look and if you want to go a step further you can turn them into a magnet…I know I’m pushing it, but if you’re going to do free engagements you want to get your “plug” in anyway you can!
•Gift Certificates:
Be creative here: Lots of ideas with this one.
•Coupons:
You can have these lying on the back table for your audience to pick up on their way out. Coupons could be for anything: One idea would be to offer a free download on your website for an ebook (possibly a chapter sample to entice the reader), an audio seminar, audio interview, or a special report you created and have posted on your product page within your website (we will talk about e-books, reports, and info products in our soon to be released special report)
•Bookmarks:
Yes, I know I’m pushing it again…but think about it for a minute, everyone loves to read and I know I am always using bookmarks, be creative and remember once again get your “plug” in on the bookmark. These are easy to create yourself and done once again on a shoe-string budget along with the inexpensive price tag.
•How-To-Reports:
Another best seller, as many people today are looking for a quick, how-to-do-anything guide, be creative and of course stay within your presentation topic.
•Cassettes:
Yes some of us “Old-Fashioned” folks still listen to cassettes.
•Videos/DVD’s:
Now you can get pretty creative with the videos. They don’t only have to be you giving your speech presentation, how about doing a ‘How-To’ (your expertise) video series, say maybe a set of three 30 minute videos/DVD’s. A recommended resource for your DVD/VHS reproduction needs is at DVD Wizard Pro.
•Teleseminars:
Big thing nowadays! Have some small flyers made up (easily create these yourself) and setting on the table with an upcoming teleseminar you’re having offering a great discount for members of your audience. Direct them to your website to sign up (Hint: Having a pre-recorded and downloadable teleseminar on your website product page can mean more profits for your company)
•Special Reports:
You can easily create special report to sell on your BOR table (Once again this can be incorporated into your website product page for immediate download or you can also have an audio special report)
•Mentor Programs:
If you are a coach or consultant don’t forget to add this service with your BOR products
What do all the above BOR product ideas mean for you? PROFITS and can be BIG profits if done properly, which means you will no longer be walking away with that empty hole in your pocket from expenses!
Doing the Math
Let’s do a little math shall we? Say there is 800 people in your audience: If you have gotten a good response from your audience you should be able to turn at least 10% of the audience into buyers which is approximately 80 people.
Say you sell a CD for $25.95 x 80 = $2,076.00 or if you sell a CD set for $49.95 x 80 = $3,996.00 minus your CD/DVD expenses which can be done pretty cheaply these days or you can do it yourself.
Now, that was just an example and only for CD’s, you need to be creative because you have a lot of possibilities here. If you offer any type of mentoring program, this can be very lucrative. Say about 1% of your audience (which is only 8 people) sign up for your yearly mentoring program and because you are an expert in your field you can easily charge anywhere from $2,500 – $3,500 per year. What does that add up too? That’s right a whopping $20,000 – $28,000….once again not bad for doing one free engagement. If you haven’t implemented any type of mentoring program into your business you may want to think about doing so!
As you can see, the profits you can make can be close to, equal or more then a paid speaking engagement.
The above figures are a rough estimate and you may have a smaller audience or you may have a bigger audience, but as you can see the possibilities are endless. So, please use the resources outlined in this report to assist you in creating your products and you will begin to see an immediate spurt in your revenue!
Be creative..and don’t give up because everyone is capable of anything once you get yourself in the right mind set and don’t let minor glitches deter you! Dedication and determination are strong and encouraging words to live by!
I know it sounds crazy…find free engagements, but if you read everything I have written in this article, you should be ready to submit your proposal for non-paying engagements. Get more recognition, become the cream of the crop, brand yourself, be the vendor of choice and Make Money!
P.S.
If you will be sending your audience to your website for a freebie or sample remember to add a “opt in” sign up box before releasing your “sample” or “freebie.” You want to capture their email address as your contact list is one of your greatest assets!

One of the most common problems I see, even with experienced public speakers, is that they do not seem to be capable of standing still when they should. It is very distracting to try to listen to a public speaking presentation when someone is wandering and swaying around on stage.
I have stated in previous articles that you should move at least three steps, in a particular direction, and for a purpose whenever you move on stage. Small to and fro movements during your speaking engagement are very distracting. As we move into a century that will likely include more distance / TV training, keeping still is even more critical when you are speaking in public.
When you are on TV or video your movements are magnified. I got a good reminder lesson in keeping still while doing the weather and traffic report for a broadcast station in Orlando, Florida. I was all set to be my highly animated self. They put me at an anchor desk and turned me loose with a set script on the teleprompter. My normal performance looked absolutely ridiculous. In fact, it wasn’t even close to being acceptable for the tight shot they used. I had to stay perfectly still with the exception of my head and eye movement and facial expressions.
You can practice this at home with a simple video camera zoomed in to a tight close up shot. Either stand or sit and don’t move your shoulders and arms at all. Talk to the camera and only allow movement from the neck up. To do an el cheapo simulation of a teleprompter, cellophane tape a script on to the bottom of the lens of the camcorder.
Once you master this technique and can convey all your non-verbal information with only head and eye movement and facial expression, you can add small amounts of body, arm and shoulder movement as the video shot gets wider.

If you want to improve your writing, you probably spend a fair amount of time reading a variety of “How To Write Good Sales Copy” kinds of information.
True?
You probably subscribe to a handful of newsletters like mine… you’ve read a few of the classic copywriting books by Claude Hopkins… John Caples… or Victor Schwab, and… you may have even read some “modern-day” books by guys like Dan Kennedy… Gary Halbert… and Joe Sugarman.
And this is good — you’re definitely going down the right track here.
Keep doing this, because knowledge applied in the right direction, really is powerful.
And in case you missed it…
The key word here, is… “applied”!
Anyway, what I want you to do right now, is to…
Completely Stop Reading These Books!
At least for a while anyway.
You see, you may not know it, but you could learn just as much — if not more — about writing effective sales copy, by reading fun stuff too, like fiction.
No, I’m not kidding, and let’s face it, you also get a lot more involved and emotionally attached to the characters in a good novel, then in a good “How To” book, any day.
Right?
See, I just finished up a few AWESOME novels, and I’d like to show you what to look for when you’re reading a good novel, and how to use this information to easily learn how to improve your sales copy.
Ready?
O.K. then.
The first book I want to tell you about is called “Motherless Brooklyn”, by an author named Jonathan Lethem, who’s actually from Brooklyn.
If you like a good old-fashioned murder / mystery / adventure and suspense book, only one that takes place in modern times, then grab yourself a copy of this book — you won’t be sorry.
It’s like a spy thriller, only there’s no spies in this one — just petty thugs and slick Brooklyn street hustlers.
Anyway, here’s why I loved this book: Check out how well this guy writes, from page 155:
“The four of them wore identical blue suits with black piping on the legs, and identical black sunglasses. They looked like a band that plays at weddings. Four white guys, assortedly chunky, pitched in the face, with pimples, and indistinct. Their car was a rental. Chunky sat in the backseat waiting and when the two who’d picked me up crushed me into the back beside him, he immediately put his arm around my neck in a sort of brotherly choke hold. The two who’d picked me off the street — Pimples and Indistinct — jammed in beside me, to make four of us on the backseat. It was a bit crowded.”
WOW!
I mean, how much cooler do you get than that?
Notice how Lethem’s writing:
Short, stacco sentences!
Lethem’s writing exactly the same way he’d be talking, if he was telling you this story in a conversation, instead of writing it.
Descriptive as all get out!
He tells you what the guys looked like… he gives you a visual and psychological anchor, by telling you they also resembled a band that plays at weddings… and… he also gives you an overview of their physical characteristics.
And the thing is, the physical attributes he’s describing, are vivid and stereotypical enough, that you can start picturing other visual, physical, and personality characteristics typically associated with people who share these same “trademarks”.
This guy’s simply brilliant!
He’s specific!
They’re not just “blue suits”, they’re “identical blue suits with black piping on the legs, and identical black sunglasses”.
Being specific makes the entire scenario much more believable and life-like. (Just the same way it does when you’re writing your sales copy.)
Do you see what my point is, about all this?
If you don’t, then you’re really missing out on a very valuable lesson here.
See, each of these techniques Lethem’s using in his fiction writing, are the same techniques you should be using in your sales copy.
They get your prospects more involved with the message you’re trying to deliver. And, if your prospects are actually taking time out of their lives to devote some mental “shelf-space” to you and your message… it brings them closer to you, and… closer to…
Buying From You!
Another book I just finished reading, is “Holes” by Louis Sachar.
My older son had been after me to read this book, and the truth is, I’m sorry I waited so long.
This was an easy book to digest… a fast read (maybe 2 hours of your time)… and boy-oh-boy, what a joy it was.
The sense of empathy (using very plain-and-simple English), Sachar was able to stir inside you, over the main characters plight, was heartfelt and simply wonderful.
If you can stir up emotions like that in your sales copy…
You’ve got a rock-solid
money-making machine on your hand!
And when you can show a “struggle to success” story the way he did, taking you by the hand and letting you walk alongside his characters as they overcome obstacle after unjust obstacle, your outcome’s going to be fantastic!
Can you do the same thing in your sales copy?
Of Course You Can!
For example, whatever you’re selling, has got to be the solution to some kind of problem… so tell your prospects stories about how you developed your product… or, how your product or service has changed someone’s life.
Either of those stories can be made into “rags to riches” or “struggle to success” stories, no?
I definitely shed a few tears after I finished reading the uplifting and pretty ironic conclusion of “Holes”, and… if you can move your prospects the same way, believe me you’ll make more than your fair share of ducats.
So read as much good fiction as you can get your hands on.
Start thinking about how your authors are painting their characters and bringing them to life for you.
And begin figuring out how the dynamics of the characters relationships are handled, and how YOU can use these same dynamics in your sales copy, to make your sales pitches compelling and “real”.
The bottom line here is, if you do the following three things, you’ll be able to use your fiction readings, to leverage your creative juices so they start flowing like the roaring rapids of the Snake River in Colorado, and not the Black Muddy River of folklore.
Here are these three simple things you must do:
Read!
Read voraciously and read like your life’s depending on it. Pretend each book you read is like a juicy thick sirloin steak, and then imagine…
You’re Freakin Starving!
And start devouring those books!
Think!
As you’re reading, s-l-o-w-l-y digest every single morsel you’re taking in. Discover what’s making your characters tick, and… even more important, figure out what it is about what’s making them tick…
That’s Going To Make Your Prospects TickToo!
Do Something!
You know, last week I saw this bit on one of those prime time television news exposés, about some poor gal who was just so desperate to lose weight.
The only problem was… she was eating enough food in a day…
To feed a small farming country in the mid-east!
Now what’s up with that?
Do you need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that’s NOT the road to losing weight?
I’m not saying it’s easy for someone in her position — NOTHING good is easy.
Anything worth while, is usually worth fighting for, and… it’s also usually incredibly difficult to achieve.
Period.
Sorry, but there’s just no getting around that one.
So if you think simply “reading” and “understanding” everything you must know about “how to write”, is going to make you even one thin dime, then you’re sorely mistaken.
To do this, you’ve actually got to go out and…
Write something!
Be, as Teddy Roosevelt said, the “man in the arena”. Feel the sweat pouring down the sides of your head… bounce back from your mistakes… and then… emerge victorious, baby!
Before I go, check out what Rod Argent said, back in 1968. (Do you know who he is?)
“Really, music is a very personal thing. It’s the product of a person’s experiences. Since no two people have been exactly alike, each writer has something unique to say. That makes anything which is not just a copy of something else, worth listening to.”
So listen to music that moves your soul… read good books that quench your thirst for becoming whole, emotionally… and enjoy creating and basking in the “non-real” things life’s imagination is offering you.
And then, use these gifts to go out and create the very best damn sales letters you can, and… start…
Enjoying… Your Results!

Why do you have to be an expert when getting speaking engagements?
The first thing you need to do before engaging into a speaking career is to define what you are an expert in. I have seen so many speakers that get relegated into the mediocre list just because they say they can talk on anything and “what would you like to hear?” Although I am not advocating sticking with one topic, I am advocating that you are an expert in a field that you choose. Do not try to be everything to everyone. The other day I came across a consultant saying to me that he was in the Application Integration business and that he had some major customers. I asked “how do you present your materials?” He explained that he simply worked with major vendors to make all their systems talk together. Then to my dismay he also added “and I do training (which is OK) and I am also a management consultant to help management make decisions with processes and how to put them together.” To each question I asked he replied “I do that too”. Now I was totally confused. All of a sudden, I did not view him as an expert and moved on.
You will find that once you specifically define your expertise, you will stick to it! You may also provide other things to your clients, but when you are speaking to an audience, YOU are the expert and not a chameleon that changes spots with the changing smell of a new business opportunity. Remember to focus on what you do best and the rest will follow; when you secure a speaking engagement, attach a subject to it, don’t leave it open.
If you can clearly define your expertise, then business will be easier to obtain. People will come to know you in that field and ask your advice. Being an expert and defining it well is the first step to a speaking career within your field. Another thing you must be aware of is your audience and why they will listen to you.

A DREAM OF A NEW PRAYER FOR AMERICA
I dreamed this early this morning, 25 May 05. In the first dream I was talking to four American veterans of the Iraqi conflict. I was telling them I was a combat wounded veteran and I had spent two years in Iraq fighting for a great cause. These men were listening intently to me and believing everything I was telling them. I then gathered all four around me, looked them in the eyes, and told them the truth. I said I had fabricated my whole story, and the reasons for the war had been falsified. I saw the wounded look of betrayal in their eyes and on their faces. I then told them the purpose for my false story. I said,”You see, leaders in high places can tell you anything just to get you to follow them. Just like the blind leading the blind, both will fall in the ditch.”
I then dreamed this dream. I had parked my red Ford Crew Cab truck in a parking lot by a large city park. I walked away and when I returned to my truck, a saw that a thief had stolen my left(driver’s) door, both left wheels and tires, and my radio was hanging by a few wires. I looked up and saw several other people who also had their vehicles vandalized by a thief. I then saw the thief surrounded by some of his stolen goods, in a small grove of trees in a city park. Other people, including police, politicians, and religious leaders began to chase the thief. The thief was too strong for them and could not be caught. I then ran up to the thief and shouted, “Stop in the name of Jesus!” He dropped to the ground like he had been hit by a baseball bat. He lay there and began to burn. He then called out to me and said, “I want to be born again. Will you pray for me?” I went up to him and although he was glowing with coals like a great log burning, he could talk and hear me. I said, “Do you want Jesus to save you?” He replied, “Yes.” All types of people, including politicians, religious leaders and ordinary American people were gathered around watching this scene. I prayed (it was a real intense prayer in my dream..agony of soul and brought tears to my eyes…my face was wet when I woke). This is the prayer, “Lord Jesus, you see the heart cry of this precious soul. Reveal your love unto him, O Lord. You have said forgive and it shall be forgiven you. There is no sin too great for you to forgive. Too, O Lord, your love is so good and so great that even you can save at the last minute.” Jesus then came and saved this thief’s soul and he gave up the ghost. I looked around and there was a look of awe on everyone’s faces. Someone stated, “That was the most beautiful prayer ever prayed. It is a new prayer for America!” There was not a dry eye in the crowd…everyone was humbled and touched by the precious presence of our Lord. I then woke up, and recorded these two dreams.

At this moment, as we write this article in the beginning of 2006, two international ERP vendors are aggressively launching their campaigns on the Brazilian ground: Microsoft Business Solutions with Microsoft Dynamics AX / Axapta (first quarter 2006) and SAP with SAP Business One (end of January/February 2006). Both companies have presence on the market in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro: SAP has mySAP-SAP R/3, sold, implemented and supported directly by SAP consultants (Sao Paulo SAP office) and Microsoft has Navision, supported by MBS partner channel. Plus SAP has SAP all-in-one, implemented through the partners. Here we are presenting our opinion on these campaigns and targeted clientele.
• Local ERPs: Microsiga has over 10% of the market and both Microsoft Business Solutions and SAP plan to appeal to Microsiga clientele. We could understand the plans, and obviously Microsiga has its own defense strategy – it fits to Brazilian taxation, payroll, government reporting. At the same time Microsoft, SAP and Oracle could play the card of international business requirements, especially from the management reporting standpoint.
• SAP Business One. If you look at SAP Business One market niche in the USA or Europe, all-in-one named user licensing program usually has minimum requirement of 2 users. In Brazil, SAP recently reconsidered it to be 5 users, that means that SAP BO doesn’t go down to the small businesses, but rather targets mid-size and even upper mid-size clients.
• Microsoft Axapta / Dynamics AX. As you know Microsoft has new name for its Project Green – now it is in the conception of Microsoft Dynamics. With Axapta and really ’starting from the ground’ – Microsoft is probably staking on Axapta as its future technology, and again it is probably would go down to the mid-market and even low mid-market with Axapta licensing. Currently Axapta is in localization beta testing mode – Brazilian taxes, Portuguese language (language is not a concern – taxes are a way more challenging).
• Oracle Financials / Applications. Oracle has long-time presence on the market here. If you are Oracle professional – you should be familiar with Oracle customization and localization technology. Oracle has LATAM localized code and portion of this is applicable to Brazil specifics.
• Multinational Companies. Both Microsoft Axapta and SAP Business One have very good positions to be chosen by Multinational corporation for it Brazilian subsidiary ERP. Both of them are localized, support Multilanguage (English and Portuguese are required in Brazil)
• Implementation Partner. In the case of multinational corporation – you need the ERP partner who is very familiar and experienced in international business, has presence in USA, Europe and Brazil
• CRM. Navision, Axapta, SAP Business One, Oracle Financials have CRM module / granule. Microsoft and Oracle have advanced CRM solutions: Microsoft CRM and Siebel respectively. Microsoft CRM has connectors to Microsoft Great Plains / Dynamics GP, Navision (through third party integration module) and Axapta integration is on the way. Also Microsoft CRM has connector to IBM Lotus Notes Domino, developed by Alba Spectrum Group, allowing you to protect the investment into Lotus Domino licenses.
• POS Connection (Point of Sale). Navision and Axapta have POS modules, for the small stores connection could be achieved via Microsoft Retail Management (Microsoft RMS)
