The other day at choir practice, our director was trying to decide if she would prefer a certain hymn in our Christmas program to be sung in parts or in unison. In a sort of offhanded way, she asked, “I wonder if the heavenly choirs will be sung in parts or in unison?”

I responded to the effect that I didn’t dare open that particular can of philosophical worms in a choir practice…

I mean, there’s all kinds of levels here. On the musical side of it, there’s plenty of fodder for both sides. Parts bring lush and rich harmonies, counterpoint, and fullness to a piece. There’s a depth to it that you simply don’t get with one single melody line.

But there’s a power to unity, too. For example, when I was in high school, as a cellist in our orchestra, we played a piece, an arrangement of “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”. I don’t even remember who did the arrangement. After the exposition, it went into so polyphonic explorations, typical of a good development section, but the recap was absolutely amazing. The entire orchestra, including the winds, all played the entire thing. Loud, slow, and in unison. Maybe it was the contrast that made it feel so big and powerful.

Another example. Many years ago, when I was still living in Indiana, my friends and I took a roadtrip to see Yes in concert in Champaign, Illinois. It was a great show, but one part stuck with me as a monumental moment in my life’s ongoing musical experience. That was Chris Squire’s bass solo. Now, typical bass solos are a time when the bassist really gets to show off his chops. Hands are dizzy and notes fly like snowflakes in a blizzard. And Chris Squire was certainly no slouch. He could match fury with the best of them.

But he comes out, and with a single light on him from above, plays “Amazing Grace”. He plays it easily, slowly, and I might add, very loud and low. The house shook. No flashy embellishments. Nothing but the song.

And it was INCREDIBLE.

But then look how often a pop singer sings without accompaniment, or how often true unison orchestral performances happen. Look at great inspired works like “The Messiah”, which expertly flips from monophony to homophony and polyphony at the drop of a baton.

So, the big philosophical question that is the extension of all this is: Does God want us lockstepping together or does he want us individually adding to the whole?

Personally, I feel that if he wanted us lockstepped, he would have backed Lucifer’s plan in the first place. I like the thought of many different voices combining together harmoniously to add to the whole. But it seems that there are a lot of us Mormons who don’t take to kindly to differences. To our credit, there are a lot of us who do, too.

And I also admit that, in music, there are times when a single melody can communicate very strongly.

But we would be foolish and remiss to allow him this victory because of the excess of a few, or our fear of embarrassment. The misinterpretation of a sign is possible with any theological position. One of the safest ways to be surer about the signs is to be patient and wait for them to unfold.

It is alright to speculate and watch as things begin to materialize but hold back on some conclusions and give God space to show us what he is doing. We must always keep in mind that some of the Jews missed the coming of their messiah because they had nailed down an exact path for his appearance without allowing that some of their speculation may not have been exactly on the mark. For example, it was well known that messiah was to come from Bethlehem but Jesus was from Nazareth. A little research, questioning and openness could have resulted in finding the rest of the story. The birth of Christ was never meant to be a secret, and anyone making even cursory inquiries could have found out that he was actually born in Bethlehem. But many were clinging hard to their pet beliefs and would not allow themselves this knowledge. One might say that they missed salvation itself, not because they were so sinful but because they were so stubborn. They had created a formula, a viewpoint or a theory that by sheer force of time and repetition had become like an immutable law.

A lack of pliability in second coming doctrine is far more serious than rigidity in any other area of scripture. Much of eschatology is yet to unfold; being rigid about an unknown is foolishness on the level of finding moral guidance from the stories of ancient mythology. No one should think that guidance comes from make believe characters and events, unfortunately, they do! Many second coming buffs are also deriving some sort of guidance from events that haven’t occurred yet. The best answer to this dilemma is found in a single saying of the Lord Jesus concerning signs. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. Mt 24:34

This verse could he called, the sign of signs. It is a capstone or the key to all the events preceding the second coming of Christ. Jesus knew the second coming would not take place in his generation so it had to be some future and seemingly unspecified generation. Yet, it is specified. That generation, is the generation in which all the other signs happen together. They cannot be spread out over millennia, centuries or even more than one single generation. This sign is what qualifies all the other signs. Simply put, if all the signs are happening concurrently, that is the sign that it is the last generation, and it will culminate with the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. Here we are given a failsafe or a perfect way to keep from falling into error in today’s second coming doctrinal maze. If you haven’t checked lately, you might want to look again, because no generation in over twenty centuries has had all the signs happening at once, except this one.

Christian: Of course I do.

Punkerslut: There are various parts of the Bible which affirm slavery to be a just method, though. Exodus 21:20-21 justifies it.

Christian: Well, that was the Old Testament.

Punkerslut: Ephesians 6:5 of the New Testament also justifies it.

Christian: The slavery in the Bible was different than the slavery of the Bible.

Punkerslut: Why did the southerners use the Bible to justify it, then?

Christian: They didn’t really understand the Bible. They interpretted it incorrectly.

Punkerslut: So, for the past two thousand years, nobody was a real Christian, because they didn’t understand the Bible, and therefore couldn’t believe it. But for the past few decades, it was only then that the Bible was really understood?

Christian: You don’t have to understand the Bible to believe it.

Punkerslut: You don’t?

Christian: No… You just have to believe it.

Punkerslut: When you don’t understand something, it means that there are parts which you may think contradict each other, or possibly they don’t properly fit together, or maybe you read or heard something when in fact the opposite is what is implied. For instance, if someone said, “My answer is yes and my answer is no,” you may be confused, because you were given a contradictory answer — but perhaps they meant a yes to one question and a no to another question. If someone said, “Because the knife was in Joe’s locker, it means that Jacob was the murderer.” You may not understand, until you find out that Jacob was the only one with access to Joe’s locker, and Joe was out of town for weeks. If someone said, “There is one statement I hate more than anything: ‘Slavery is right!’” and you walked in only while he said, “Slavery is right!” you may also be confused. In all of these instances, you didn’t understand.

Christian: But you believed, and that’s what counts with Christianity.

Punkerslut: Precisely. If someone said something that confused you, wouldn’t you want to apply reason to it and try to understand?

Christian: Yes, of course.

Punkerslut: So, you agree then that Christianity can only thrive, and has only thrived, because people have placed less importance upon reasoning and logic, particularly in religious matters?

Christian: I didn’t say that.

Punkerslut: You said that in Christianity, you need not understand and that must only believe. You said that every Christian up to 50 years ago didn’t understand the Bible since slavery and prejudice have been prevalent until then. And you said that if you don’t understand, attempting to comprehend is reasonable.

Christian: So?

Punkerslut: Christians accepted what they didn’t understand. Reason would ask them to investigate what they didn’t understand, but they ignored reason, even insulted and criminalized it. As the Christians moved from the position of being eaten by lions to being the ones who tortured others, the only way that a person could become a Christian was by belief — and belief in something so contradictory must be accompanied by an abhorance of reason, correct?

Christian: You’re twisting my words.

Punkerslut: No, I was actually quite simple and precise in showing you how I went from one step of my argument to the next.

Christian: Well, whatever… Even so, reason cannot save you, only Christ can.

Punkerslut: You’re just restating your original opinion. What is the method by which we decipher truth from falsity? Reason. If reason indicted Christianity for hypocrisy and contradiction, it’s not trying to save you, exactly, but tell you that Christianity cannot do that either. But then again, the idea that you need to be saved is also a Christian idea.

Christian: I don’t believe that.

Punkerslut: What part?

Christian: All of it.

Punkerslut: Could you be more specific?

Christian: Everything you say.

Punkerslut: Yes, that part was clear when you said “all of it.”

The story define an enslave condition on the life of adam. Adam did not have the ability to change the condition of their livelihood. The opinionated view on the story about God has not increase the awareness of Him but has become a pit trapping us. The game we play will never establish the glory God expect of us. It’s in the proper interpretation of the story about God we have enlightenment. We can not assemble together as one voice because of the deception. The Deceiver who snares us knows the one voice would be the word of God.

The entire context of Acts 3 and 4 is the healing of the lame man at the Temple Gate. This is the occasion of Peter’s declaration that his level of power or holiness had nothing to do with it.

You see the translators gave us this:

Acts 4:12
12 Neither is there SALVATION in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be SAVED. (KJV)

They should have given us this:

Acts 4:12
12 Neither is there HEALING in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be HEALED. (KJV)

Why is this? You see the Greek word for saved and salvation is also one of the Greek words for healed. In other words, saved and healed are translations of the same basic Greek root.

Now, this Greek root is used here in this verse. In this context, however, this Greek root has nothing to do with the salvation of the soul.

This context pertains to the healing of the lame man at the Temple Gate. Read it for yourself and see. The plan, method, necessity or even a question of salvation never occurs in this context.

Therefore, Acts 4:12 above would be more in line with the facts of the context of these two chapters if the verse had read thus: “Neither is there HEALING in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be HEALED.”

In other words, God gave no name for our healing except the name of Jesus. When our “arm of the flesh” has failed, the name of Jesus will work because that is the name God left us for our healing from the start.

Thank God for medical science. They are God’s gift to us. Nevertheless, those times they can’t come through for us, we still have the all powerful name of Jesus.

Mark it well. There is no other name for healing. This is God’s doing. There is no other name for healing. Truly, “neither is there healing in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be healed.”

people are calling on angels more with our needs being so great
these days? They have always been there for us but do not

our free will. I find that when I feel the most hopeless angels
come to help. They are an asset that we cannot do without in our
lives.

faith, be it done unto you.” (Matt 9:29)

Friends, we must believe without a doubt that we will have good
things in life, that we will be guided to the right situations at
the right times, and that we really will see our dreams
manifested. We will, if we believe because our faith can move
mountains!

God has a wonderful plan for each of His children according to
his or her own unique gifts and abilities. (Jeremiah 29:11)
Therefore, we must trust that God is working all things for our
benefit according to His plan. (Romans 8:28) It really is just a
matter of faith.

The Bible says, “Without faith, it is impossible to please God,
for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a
rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” (Heb 11:6)

I love the part where it says, “Believe that He is.” Believe that
He is what? Our Heavenly Father and God Almighty! The author of
the entire universe. The greatest force that has ever existed.
And, He knows right where you are. Every hair on your head is
numbered. (Luke 12:7) If you don’t have any hair, don’t worry,
your fuzz is probably numbered.

Living the abundant and prosperous Christian life is really just
a matter of getting out of God’s way. Quit trying to always
figure things out. Turn off the reasoning and let Him do His work
in you, through you, and for you, making you perfect and
complete, lacking nothing.

Psalms 18:29 says, “In your strength I can crush an army; with my
God I can scale any wall.” (NLT)

Decide to have faith in any given situation. Believe everything will
work out fine no matter
what things may look like. As Christians, we live by faith, not
by sight. (2 Cor 5:7) After all, God is the final authority in
any given situation and He knows exactly what He wants to do in
your life.
