Virgin Media to Upgrade Millions of 2Mb Broadband Packages

Following Virgin Media’s announcement that it is to refocus its portfolio to concentrate on faster broadband services, the UK provider today also revealed plans for a major programme to move millions of its current 2Mb customers up to a superfast 10Mb broadband service.

The migration programme is set to begin in May this year and Virgin Media tout the project as being the “largest-scale speed upgrade ever to take place in the UK.”

With the upgraded service set up more Virgin Media customers will be able to make use of high bandwidth services, such as catch-up TV or online games. In an official press statement, the provider said that it was happy to support the Government’s Digital Britain agenda and jump-start the UK’s high speed broadband adoption levels.

As a result of the imminent change, Virgin Media’s new fibre optic product portfolio now comprises of an ‘up to 10Mb’, ‘up to 20Mb’ and an ‘up to 50Mb’ service.

Speaking on the programme announcement, Neil Berkett, chief executive of Virgin Media, said: “Our entry-level broadband product is now twice the speed of comparable services and, with our new 10-20-50 range, we clearly offer the highest quality broadband service in the UK.” He continued, “The migration of millions of 2Mb customers to 10Mb is only possible because of the power of our next generation network and is just one example of how we are creating exciting propositions for consumers which provider transformational experiences and go way beyond their expectations.”
