What is a Hollywood Story?

From the analysis of 100’s of deconstructed films:

a) In all of our deconstructed stories, a Transformation occurs. Sometimes the Transformaton is overt (Dances with Wolves, 1990) and sometimes subtle (Jaws, 1975).

b) Transformation occurs, without exception, as a result of passing through the stages of the Complete Hero’s Journey.

c) There is always a Call to Adventure [separate and distinct from the Inciting Incident], not necessarily a Refusal; not necessarily a meeting with the Mentor, always a First Threshold, always a Physical Separation, always a Transformation in the form of Trials, always an Ideal and a Sword, not necessarily (but often) a Rebirth through Death, always an Atonement, always an Apotheosis, not necessarily (but very often) an Ultimate Boon, not necessarily a Denial, not necessarily a Magic Flight, not necessarily a Rescue from Without, not necesarily a Crossing the Return Threshold, always a Master of Two Worlds and always a Freedom to Live.

d) One or more characters conquer a number of challenges. There are four core challenges: a) the Inner Challenge, b) the Romantic Challenge, c) the Outer Challenge and d) the Greater Antagonism. In Titanic (Academy Award Winner Best Film 1997; No. 1 All-Time USA Boxoffice with receipts of over $600,000,000), Rose’s Inner Challenge is to overcome her committment to her mother as well as Jack’s lower status, her Romantic Challenge is Jack, her Outer Challenge is Cal and the Greater Antagonism is escaping the sinking ship. In American Beauty (Academy Award Winner 1999), Lester Burnham’s Inner Challenge is to feel good about himself, his Romantic Challenge is Angela, his Outer Challenge is his marriage with Carolyn and the Greater Antagonism is Col. Frank Fitts, US Marine Core.

e) Though the story may not pass through a stage of the Hero’s Journey, elements of that stage may be present. For example, it is most common for a Mentor to give the Hero a Magical Gift, however, in The English Patient (Academy Award Winner Best Film, 1996), Hana picks up a necklace [from the ground] at that stage of the Journey; in Gladiator (Academy Award Winner Best Film, 2000), Maximus picks up a statuette [from the mantelpiece] at that stage of the Journey.

Algebra Helpers

We can assert that Algebra is the heart of maths. If you genuinely want to know about mathematics and its basics then you should have a complete and thorough knowledge of algebra. Deriving the result for the product of 223 and 112 is quite easy if you use a computer. But when it comes to exponential (e) of 223 and logarithmic (log) of 112 then most definitely, you will need some kind of algebraic estimator or algebra solver. Graphing a circle will be easy for this given formula X2 + Y2 = 4 but when it comes for an inequality like (X-2)2 + (Y-4)2 > 20 then it will be quite harder to plot the graph. In this situation algebra software package can help you immensely since you only need to enter the inequality and graph will be plotted within very little time. These kinds of software can easily solve any kind of algebraic, arithmetical and radical expressions of any level of complexity.

Domain and Range of a Function

Although, finding the domain and range of a function such as Y = X2 can be easily found by considering the number range on the X-Y plane, defining the domain and range of a log(tan 2x + sin 3x) = cosine(-4)(2x) will be way too difficult. But thanks to algebra calculating systems, you can now solve these complex sums in no time while being able to comprehend each and every step that it takes you to successfully resolve the mathematical question.

Coordinate Geometry

Now you can easily find the vertex and directrix and whether parabola opens up or down by just inserting the equation into algebra software package. Addition, subtraction and multiplication of trinomials are quite tedious, since they involve lots of terms to manipulate. But algebra calculator will do this job in much less time and with 100% accuracy. Solving determinants and matrices of 3×3 or 4×4 order can become very tough since it involves lots of calculation; getting inverse of matrices even more so. However using algebra software packages will make this task much simpler.

So, with the introduction of algebra software, the times where you dreaded the sight of indices, fractions or quadratic equations , comes to an end. If you could not stand geometry, you may even start liking it afterwards thanks to the computerized algebra systems that will automatically solve everything you ever need.

Spot Cooler a Wise Investment for Miami Businesses

Looking for a backup cooling system for your home or office? Then consider purchasing a spot cooler to protect you in case of an emergency. A spot cooler is basically a portable air conditioning unit used when extra cooling is needed. Anyone who lives in Miami or has been to South Florida knows that temperatures can get quite toasty in the summer time. Along with the hot temperatures comes extreme humidity that also can be quite cumbersome. In this Miami environment, spot cooling has become very useful in places that lack a permanent air conditioner.

A spot cooler can be used in all different types of places, such as an office, residential home or seasonal home. Large industrial plants and large apartment complexes often keep these devices on hand in case a permanent air conditioning unit goes out, or if they merely have a certain area that needs additional cooling.

With the hot temperatures and the high humidity in Miami, having one of these coolers on hand is a good idea. This is especially true if you have a business with important, expensive equipment that can’t afford get too hot. Even simple things like computers can be easily damaged in a room that gets too warm, which is why it’s always a good idea to have a spot cooler on hand in case a need for spot cooling ever pops up.

If your home does not have a permanent air conditioning system, or if the AC system is on the fritz in the stifling heat of the summer and can’t be quickly repaired, spot coolers are an affordable way to get the heat out of your home.

Company Pays Compensation for Communication Failure

Camas UK Ltd. has paid £6,000 to its employee Anthony Lacey, for failing to communicate changed workplace procedures to him, which led to an accident in May 2007.

Mr. Lacey, an engineer with the company, had been instructed to replace the face plates of the company’s machinery when he met with the accident. Earlier procedure required the employees to use glue around the full circumference of the pad, but under the new procedure, glue was to be used only on the top and bottom of the pads, which Mr. Lacey had not been informed about. As a result, he applied the amount of force usually required, and was caught unawares and unprepared when the pad came off more easily. The magnet ended up falling on his thumb, causing a double fracture, and the victim had to go on a leave from work for the next three months.

Camas UK recently accepted its mistake and made a settlement out of court.

The GMB union, of which Mr. Lacey is a member, took up his cause. Their spokesperson, Andy Worth, was of the opinion that Mr. Lacey could have been saved from the accident if the employers had warned him about the changes in the working procedures. The union took a strong stand against such negligence on the part of the employer, terming it as ‘unacceptable’.

Laura Hadfield, the legal counsel for the employee, added that it is the duty of the employers to ensure a safe working environment for their employees and to train them on the procedures to be followed in the organisation. She remarked that even a simple communication lapse in this case had resulted in disastrous consequences for Mr. Lacey, which showed that the employers needed to exercise more care.

Health and safety training such as the coshh courses provided by Workplace Law Training are an ideal way to help avoid accidents like this one.

Making Transitions

Ever notice how smoothly some speakers or writers move you through their speech or memo? It seems they effortlessly take you from start to finish without making you strain to follow.

Yet, while the reading may be effortless, the writing probably took some extra work and attention to detail. In fact, some writers would say you should work as hard on the transitions between ideas as you do on the ideas themselves.

Consider copywriting guru Joe Sugarman, who says the job of each piece of copy, from the headline down, is to get you to read the next paragraph. And the paragraph after that. And to keep on reading them until you get to the ‘offer,’ where you’re asked to order the featured product.

To get readers from one paragraph to the next, or from one idea to the next, we use transitions, words or phrases that ‘pull’ the reader along, or in the case of speeches, pull the listener along.

For examples, take a look at the opening words to the second, third, and fourth paragraphs above. The second paragraph opens with ‘Yet,’ which implies that the idea you read in the first paragraph wasn’t complete. It should ‘pull’ you into the second paragraph. You’ll notice that the third and fourth paragraphs also aim to pull you along.

Later, we’ll look at ways of constructing transitions, but for now let’s focus on their strategic use.

First, and touching on an idea we explored above, transitions help ensure that readers or listeners get the complete message. For readers, in particular, it means they’re less likely to stop after reading the headline, subject line, or first paragraph.

Granted, you still need good content that compels to some degree. But, whatever the content, your chances of getting the reader to go all the way to the end of the document, or the ‘offer,’ increases significantly with effective transitions.

Second, smooth transactions allow the reader or the person listening to your speech to concentrate on the message, rather than its delivery.

You know from experience how hard it is to take in the message when each new paragraph seems to abruptly introduce a new idea. It’s a bit like driving along a street and having to stop for red lights at many successive intersections.

Third, and this relates to the second point, you’ll become a stronger writer if you use transitions. Not just because of the transitions, but because their use forces you to manage the ideas in your document or speech.

The process of starting each new paragraph with a transitional word or phrase can’t help but lead to you to link the idea in that paragraph to the preceding paragraph.

That’s true even when you make a major shift, because in that case you’d use a transition signal of some kind. Remember “And now for something completely different,” made famous by Monty Python’s Flying Circus?

In summary (another transitional signal), transitions from one paragraph to another, or from one idea to another, make our communication more effective.

Can Quotes Inspire Creativity?

Sometimes reading a quick quotation can provide writers with inspiration to continue writing.

Why does this work? I do not know for sure.

Will it work for you? I do not know that either.

But try it and find out!

Search a comprehensive collection of quotations on this page

http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art4753.asp

I would like to suggest a writing exercise created by Shery Ma Belle Arrieta, owner of Positive Quotes. Her creative writing exercise is published below with her permission.

WRITING EXERCISE # 1: GREAT MEN SAID IT, I LIVE IT! By Shery Ma Belle Arietta

* short intro – Over the years, decades, and even centuries, many great men and women made their mark in history through something they have said. Quotable quotes as some would say. These people have said many an inspiring quote that books containing just these quotes continue to be published time and time again. I have found that a quote I come across can encapsulate an event, memory or a belief that I experienced, recalled and clung to. When I come across a quote, I immediately think of what it means to me and my life. Yes, a great man said a quote, and I live the quote.

* the purpose – The purpose of this creative writing exercise is to let you be guided by an inspiring or motivating quote towards writing a short article that can either inspire and motivate others, strengthen your conviction, or even illustrate an important event in your life.

* the steps (with example if it helps) – The first step is for you to have a favorite quote with you. It may be a line in a poem or a song, a verse from the Bible, or something that a famous person once said.

Next, write that quote on top of a piece of paper. Ask yourself some questions.

Why is this quote important to me?

How does this relate to my life? My beliefs? My experiences?

What does this quote make me think/remember/feel?

An example of a meaningful quote to me is this billboard ad I see everyday when I go to work: “We need to talk.” – God.

It made me think, question myself, look into what I have been doing and made me realize something important missing in my life.

* an example – Here is an example of a short article I was able to write based on that quote:

The Greatest Billboard Ad

Every morning on my two-hour commute to work, I make it a point to sit on the left side of the bus, or stand on the left side when I run out of seats.

Why? Because on the left side of the freeway, there’s this huge black billboard that’s waiting for someone to lease the ad space. Whoever owned that ad space was wise to put the temporary ad. Every morning, I watch out for it, read it, then set the call into action.

It’s the greatest billboard ad I’ve ever seen: There in the middle of the board, in white letters are the words, “We need to talk.” And God said it.

Four simple words that spoke volumes. The first time I saw it, read it, I was immediately faced with something I have neglected to do for a very long time:

Devote a time for serious talk time with God. Just Him and me.

It struck a chord in me. I realized that all this time, when I’ve been causing pain to my best friend by accusing him of not talking to me anymore, I failed to see that God IS the one to talk to.

When we get right down to matters of the heart and spirit, He’s the One we should turn to. He won’t ever get tired of listening, and He speaks to us through our hearts and souls.

Whenever I think of those times that I’ve hurt my best friend, I long for us to talk again. This time, not just him and me, but him, me and God. I’m sure He’ll welcome it.

You don’t have to write a full-length essay based on a quote. Short, 3-4 paragraphs will do. Just something that will make you think and serve as a warm up writing exercise.

These short articles can later be the basis for longer works.

* activity choices

Go out. Look for billboard ads. Use a line from a billboard ad that strikes you as meaningful. Write a 100 word or less essay based on that ad.

Surf on to a “quote-generator” site such as Siglets.com. Write a 150-word article based on the first quote you read there.

Remember how our mothers used to tell us the same thing over and over again?

Dig back in your memory bank and recall one of your mother’s favorite line (this can be either taken as something you hated to hear her repeat when you were younger or something you followed when you were growing up).

Write a 200-word essay based on your mother’s line. (You can also use this based on a line your father, teacher, brother, sister, etc. has said.)

Choose from any of these word: COURAGE, RESPECT, SUCCESS, TRUST. If you have a book of quotes with you (you can also search for it online), find a quote about your choice. Once you find the appropriate quote, write about it.

What’s your favorite song? From that, what’s your favorite line? Or maybe it’s the chorus you like the most. Based on that, write a 200-word essay on why you like that part of the song.

At the risk of bearing my soul for all the web to see, below is what I wrote for activity#5.

My favorite song – Run Baby Run by Sheryl Crow

My favorite line – But he failed and taught her young, the only thing she’d need to carry on — He taught her how to run baby run, run baby run, run baby run, so run baby run, run baby run, run baby run… Baby loves to run…

The repetition of these few words combined with my interpretation of the rest of the lyrics tears at my heart as much today as it did the first time I heard the song more than two years ago.

The initial impact was overwhelming for me to say the least. The song unveiled an undeniable recollection of past events in my mind almost immediately.

Although the words evoke a memory of something somber about my life, they also clarified more than 20 years of confusion and questions that haunted me since the day my father left when I was about 7 years-old.

I hated him and I loved him at the same time. I hated him for not loving me the way I wanted him to. I loved him for loving me at all.

I made many bad choices as a teenage girl, who grew up in a single parent home with a mother, who had to work a lot just to support my little sister and me, which inevitably resulted in us having too much freedom and not enough supervision.

I do not regret my choices. I’ve learned a lot from my failed judgments and spontaneous decisions.

What I did not learn until I was about 30 years-old (after the death of my grandfather, Thomas J. Kline, Jr., God Rest His Soul, who was the primary male figure in my life) was that I had to stop running!

Just as the song says, this Baby did love to run (just like her daddy – I realize now).

I ran from state to state to see Dead shows for years, from the East Coast to the West Coast and back for three months on a spur of the moment cross-country adventure, and among other things from job to job for a few years.

I had fun – the time of my life – of course.

But I failed to understand that running from what I didn’t like in life would not make it go away. I didn’t see that until I dealt with certain issues, my problems would persist.

But now I get it. I didn’t have a clue about how my behavior began or how my father, childhood experiences, and absence of my father, influenced my actions until I heard this song.

As I began to sing along – “He failed and taught her young, the only thing she’d need to carry on – He taught her how to run baby run baby run…” it suddenly became clear.

At least he taught me something I guess…

Making a Living as a Web Writer

Getting your start in web writing is not a difficult process. The first step is getting together samples of your work. If you have published samples, then get them out. You also can write your own samples that have not been published. You just have to be honest with potential clients if they ask.

Next you should find a place to begin submitting your work. If you are willing to write for low pay – and plenty of writers are when they start out – then you may want to consider signing up for Associated Content. You write an article and submit it. They read it and decline it or make an offer. The process is simple.

Another place you can try is Constant Content. It works a bit differently. You register and submit articles. Someone reads and accepts or rejects them. You set the price you want to charge for the article, and buyers can purchase the article through the site. Although plenty of the articles there are low-paying, a number of articles sell for $100 or more.

Once you have gained one or two credits through these places, try out Rent A Coder. It’s the best place to begin to get a feel for the client side of web writing. You will be able to bid and write up a proposal for various projects. The buyer will select someone and pay Rent A Coder the agreed-upon fee (that you set) for the project. You can communicate with the buyer throughout the entire process, and you will be paid once the work is completed.

While you can continue writing for Associated Content and Rent A Coder, you should begin to search out new jobs before you begin to rely on one source. The first rule of writing is to diversify. If you’re depending on one client or source, then you’re in serious trouble if they disappear. Begin searching free job boards at places like Writer’s Row so that you can start applying for jobs. Streamline the process by writing up a standard introductory letter that you simply tailor to each ad and put together your resume.

People serious about web content writing should have their own website as their eventual goal. As soon as you’ve had five writing projects for websites, it’s time to put together a site. You can include your rates or ask people to email you with project details. Include your bio and links to your work. Also include any special experience or areas of expertise that you have.

By following this simple plan, you will be positioning yourself to begin to make a living as a web writer.

You’re free to reprint this article, but you must include it in its entirety. My byline and the following bio (with active links) must be included.

Brandi Rhoades is a freelance writer living and working in Kentucky with her husband and son. She is the owner of The WAHP (http://www.the-wahp.com) for work at home parents and Pure Awakenings (http://www.pureawakenings.com) where you can find her works for sale, including the booklet The Basics of Web Writing.
