Is Your Writing Strong or Weak? Find Out How the Words You Use Can Make All the Difference

Your ability to use the right words to convey your message is one of the most important aspects of creative writing. That’s why writers are often called “wordsmiths.” We use words to create thoughts and impressions and scenes in readers’ heads. We use them to inform, inspire, incite, or entertain. Using the wrong words can not only muddle your message, it can also weaken your writing. One example of this is the overuse of adverbs.

Adverbs are often called “-ly words,” because they commonly end in -ly: usually, mostly, unjustly, etc. By definition, the adverb is the part of speech that “modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb.” In his memoir, On Writing, Stephen King’s says, “Kill your darlings.” Adverbs are some of the darlings to which he was referring.

Don’t get me wrong; the adverb is a valid part of speech. As such, it has its uses. Often, however, we overuse it to the point that it becomes ridiculous. When it reaches that point, it weakens your writing, whether you write fiction, hard news, essay or poetry. For example, instead of, “She cried really hard,” you would want to say, “She sobbed.” Or, even better, “Sobs wracked her body.” See how much more of an image that creates? The first example is weak; the last two are stronger. They’re stronger because they use action verbs and concrete nouns. The reader can envision what you’re writing about.

Of course, in the throes of creativity, it’s difficult to stop and weed out all the adverbs. I don’t suggest you do that. (Even Stephen King doesn’t suggest you do that.) Rather, let yourself get your ideas down on paper. Once you’ve captured them in written form, your work begins. Go back through your writing and pick out each and every adverb – yes, all of them – then put the adverb through a test. Can the verb-adverb combo be replaced by a stronger verb? If so, replace it. If you can’t find a stronger verb, check and see if the adverb is even needed. Often, it won’t be. For example, in the phrase, “He was terribly handsome in a forbidding kind of way,” do you need the word “terribly”? No.

Okay, we’ve talked about the importance of keeping adverbs to a minimum. What about adjectives? Adjectives, of course, are the words that modify, or describe, nouns – pretty, large, angry, petite, etc. I’m not going to spend much time on adjectives. I do want to point out that, while not as problematic as adverbs, they can be overused. Like adverbs, they have valid uses, but they often provide the lazy way out when it comes to descriptive writing.

If you want to know if your adjective is needed, test it in much the same way you would an adverb. For instance, instead of a “big house,” you’d want to say, “mansion.” That’s a simple example, but you get the idea. Here’s a point you should remember: never use two words where one will suffice. But that’s for another article. For now, work on using the “write” words to both strengthen your writing and give it that missing creative edge. You’ll be glad you did.

Was There a Time in Your Life that You Considered Being a Financial Provider?

Was there a time in your life that you considered being a financial provider? Actually, with the experience I had, I can say that it’s not really that difficult. All you need to do is to acquire RG146 compliance training from a registered training organization. Policy Statement 146 or RG146 is controlled by the securities and investments commission of Australia, popularly known as the ASIC. This policy statement presents the fundamentals of financial marketing and essentials of the financial services business. Apart from that, they also offer education on protocols that are mandatory in order to start giving advice to a certain client.
This structure of education can be taken as an 8-day course and is recognized as the diploma of financial planning. The eight-day course is being conducted in a classroom with around 10 other students. If you don’t have the time to sit in a class, you have the option of acquiring a distance education course. Assessments are done in the classroom and for the distance education, fax or online assessments are being done. All assessments are quite easy if you read the preliminary material given to you. A virtual interview or role-play will be conducted by you and an evaluator which allows the evaluator to criticize whether you are ready to handle a customer since basically, you’ll end up handling a customer anyway.

Female Underwear Sales Do Amazing in the UK Economic Market

Female lingerie sales are rising even in these credit crunch markets. With well known stores suffering a dip in sales and high street retailers closing down quicker and quicker, the lingerie market is seeing sales inflate at a stunning rate.

For the biggest variety in hot lingerie, lingerie retailers retail a range of alluring and recession busting underwear. Of course, girls lingerie is not only for the ladies. Gentlemen’s underwear is furthermore seeing a shoot up in sales, mainly due to the famous David Beckham billboard ads for Emporio Armani. Check this sexy tankinis from Phax, Sunflair, Gok Wan, Gottex, Seafolly and Miracle Suit.

Thus whilst the British recession continues to grab newspaper headlines, it seems females are more interested in grabbing mind-blowing lingerie.

“Winter Passing” Is A Writer’s Tale & A Commentary About Mentoring

Watching Ed Harris play an aging, depressed, but still likeable writer who faces a reunion with his estranged daughter in “Winter Passing,” is both an upper and a downer.

This is an actor who has been getting more internal throughout his career.

He works from inside out, despite the fact that he has been costumed in suburban Michigan tatters and in a stringy, thin, white mop of a haircut.

The world revolves around this once famous, but now reclusive novelist. Other characters live with him. And their role is to feed, comfort and protect him from savaging admirers from the MFA program at Iowa, no less.

Which of course, leads me to my point.

There is an undeniable energy given off by creative luminaries, and it is this force field, that enables them to be eccentric, and deserving of our time and serious attention, though they may be fall down drunk before breakfast.

I had the great opportunity in my doctoral program at USC to study with a Visiting Professor Emeritus from The University of Iowa, a patriarch in the field of Rhetoric, and a very decent gentleman, who, to my knowledge, had no disabling vices.

I did some of my finest original research and wrote some of my best papers for his seminars. His sessions were surprisingly, but happily populated by no more than a handful of eager and respectful admirers.

Why did I do some of my most important work in his presence?

Maybe that word is a clue: presence.

He had it, and great contributors do, and this is why it is so important to invest time with them.

For all of his talent, Ed Harris doesn’t seem to portray the kind of positive influence that makes mentoring so significant. He might be a famous writer; we’re told this. But, apart from the diligent caring of his minions, we don’t see how he merits this special attention.

Contrast this with yet another great man with whom I studied, and for whom I was an unofficial chauffeur on Saturdays, after class: Peter F. Drucker.

He just passed away at 95, but I knew him as a sprightly 80 year-old. I got more from our time together, merely by chatting and by being in the same space, than most people get, studying for 10 years with his inferiors.

If only Harris could have been better in this film, another generation of grateful and willing apprentices could have been spawned!

European Lotto plus Something You Might Not Recognize. How it Works, Who it Applies to plus How You May Play that Giant European Lottery

The European lotto was originally set up by the national lotteries of France, Spain and the UK and was unveiled in February-04. The initial lottery draw was on Feb 13th 04 in Paris. The Spain, France and the United Kingdom were the only nations partaking in the beginning but lotteries from Austria, Belgium, the Republic of Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal and Switzerland also got involved in October 2004.

The euro millions lotto or the Euro lotto, as it’s commonly best-known, gathers the lotto ticket revenues of the nine partaking European countries delivering a sizeable Euro Lottery “jackpot”. With the sum of countries joining the Euro on the increase, that will without a doubt lead to new states partaking in the Euro Millions lotto. An increase in the number of individuals partaking in the Euro millions lottery will result in a continued increase of the already large Euro Millions “jackpots”.

Q. How To Play The Euro Millions Lottery?

Each and every participant must select 5 main numbers from one to fifty and two Lucky Star numbers from one to nine. During the lotto draw, five main and two lucky-star numbers are then selected at random from two lotto draw machines containing numbered lotto balls.

European Lottery Prizes

The probabilities of scooping the European Lottery jack-pot is a remote 1 : seventy six million but the likelihood of winning a money prize is a fairly decent 1 : twenty four. When the jack-pot is not won on a given lottery draw, it is carried over to the following lottery draw which results in an ever increasing jackpot prize. New rules added on the 09/02/07 restrict the amount of successive roll-overs to 11, with the jack-pot rolling out to lower value levels succeeding the eleventh lottery draw when the prize is not collected.

The new rules also initiated Euro Lotto “Super Draw” which come about twice annually plus they offer jack-pots in the region of 100 million pounds. The difference with Super-Draws is that the jackpot has to be won during the calendar week of the draw; as a result, when there is no ticket corresponding, all the numbers drawn and top prize will then be allotted to the lottery ticket holder(s) in the next winning prize level.

Truth or Lie: Fiction vs. Memoir – How Memoir Writers Can Approach Truth and Healing

The recent flap about James Frey’s A Million Little Pieces has hit the media with a big bang, bringing the age-old debate about what is acceptable when writing memoir–a “real” story. Every time a memoir is released that gains media attention this debate is raised. Mary Karr, The Liar’s Club, Jennifer Lauck, Blackbird, and Vivian Gornick, Fierce Attachments, all defended their memoirs in various medias, and all said that some recreations of actual reality had to occur in order to write the story and make it interesting.

As a memoir teacher, I find that people are very worried about the ethical issues involved in memoir writing. For example, the writers ask such questions as, “what if I don’t remember the exact conversation when my mother died,” or “I don’t know what clothes I was wearing the day my father went away forever.” I am always moved by these innocent, caring questions, because the writer is trying very hard to be truthful and accurate, and not leave any room to be accused of dishonesty.

In my memoir Don’t Call Me Mother I researched the time the train arrived in Perry, Oklahoma to make sure the scene I was painting and the conflict with my grandmother about how long she’d kept my father waiting at the train station–three hours! was accurate. My memory told me it was a long time, but finding the time of scheduled arrival made me feel great–memory was not all I was drawing upon to create a story that would be taken seriously as “real.” In fact, when I began writing the stories that eventually turned into my memoir, I was calling it “fiction,” but the writing group challenged me about how unrealistic it was that a mother would act the way my mother acted, and that my grandmother was portrayed as “too over the top,” thus unbelievable. My answer was, “but it was all true.” Their response: “It doesn’t matter what is true in fiction, but it does for memoir.”

I realized that the power of the story I was going to tell was that it was true, and I did my best to recreate scenes that delivered the truth. Naturally, childhood memory is subjective, any memory is subjective, but over the years, as I talked with people who knew parts of the story and visited locations where the story took place, I discovered that indeed I had remembered very well, and I had not made things up in my mind. However, I am sure that if my grandmother and mother were alive to challenge what I wrote, they would have another point of view.

In order to reach out to the reading public and go beyond private journaling, a memoir writer must create a story that has a shape, drama, and story arc. This may mean constructing a scene that conflates time, or adds costumes to our characters that they may or may not have worn, but our job is to be as accurate and as honest as we can be. If we change the plot of our lives because another plot would be more interesting to the publisher, we are in the realm of fiction. If we say we had relationships we didn’t have because it would make a better story, we need to call it fiction.

A memoir writer needs to write a first draft that sifts through the happenings, feelings, and challenges and get them down on the page–a draft that is healing and purging–and important work.

Publishing is another stage. The writer must ask many questions of the work–how much to include, what is the shape of the book, and how to write it so others can identify and understand.

What to say about James Frey? None of us can know for sure what went on for him as he constructed his book, and what he remembered. On January 15, Mary Karr wrote a piece in the New York Times about memoir writing and she had this to say,

“Call me outdated, but I want to stay hamstrung by objective truth, when the very notion has been eroding for at least a century. When Mary McCarthy wrote ‘Memoirs of a Catholic Girlhood’ in 1957, she felt obliged to clarify how she recreated dialogue. In her preface, she wrote: ‘This record lays a claim to being historical – that is, much of it can be checked. If there is more fiction in it than I know, I should like to be set right.’”

Mary went on to talk about how much she learned, and how healing it was when she didn’t make passages in her book more “interesting” or shape them into a slightly different story. “If I’d hung on to my assumptions, believing my drama came from obstacles I’d never had to overcome – a portrait of myself as scrappy survivor of unearned cruelties – I wouldn’t have learned what really happened. Which is what I mean when I say God is in the truth.”

What a great ideaas we write memoir we are reaching for something beyond our conscious selves. In the river of creativity and the search for truth, there are forces beyond us moving us along to a place we didn’t even know about, a place of healing and resolution. We can hope that James Frey also has found, or is finding, a resolution for his suffering, and that all memoir writers do the same, by wrestling with what truth is, and writing it out with a full voice.

Linda Joy Myers, Ph. D., prize winning author of Becoming Whole: Writing Your Healing Story, is a Marriage and Family therapist and teaches memoir-as-healing workshops in the San Francisco Bay Area and nationally. Linda’s work has been praised by reviewers, healers, and radio and television interviewers.
