SearchNo-one could accuse Victoria Pixie Lott of not trying. Before what she would breathlessly describe as the longest set I have ever played (just over an hour) she posted her CV (3 Brit proposals! 500k albums sold! 1,000,000 albums sold) on the giant video screens, omitting only the stage college parts.
For all its mortifying hubris, that CV did remind us that thirteen months back, she had not released even a single. Now Lott is branching into acting and if the new, Wind Underneath My Wings-esque Damaged Arrow, which made its live debut last night, is any yardstick, the 19-year-old is prepared to miss her twenties and go directly to middle aged AOR. For all of the restrictions of her band, who gave each impression of having a season in Eastbourne to get back to and who stood statuesque and silent, taking a look at the floor when Lott quickly left the stage, she covered Gladys Knight’s Midnight Train To Georgia and Plan B’s she claimed with guarantee.
She is not a great mover yet, she’ll need to stop calling the fans you fellows extremely soon and whether her voice was newly huskified thru overwork or increased sexualisation is still to be seen, but Lott, you think, covets Kylie Minogue’s pop crown. Indeed, Lott’s straightforward though not simplified pop attacks territory that was Minogue’s domain before her up to date rut. The impossible to resist lads and lasses packed a poppy punch; the Glitterstomp of Ma Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh) recommended a deviant undercurrent and if there has to be gloopy ballads, they may just as well be as made as Cry Me Out. She is a long way from the completed article, but Pixie Lott is certainly in this for the long run.
This pop princess may yet become the queen of all she surveys.
