For every occasion there is a laid down rule to be followed and that is the case in graduation ceremonies. This also is the case for the graduation gowns. The tradition and history that is followed today be the gowns can be traced far back to the 12th century. Many people claim that he church began the first schools, how this is true is not determined, but most of the historians are of this opinion. The buildings that were used for classes did not have what we called central heating; the buildings were either a church or a building very close to the church. It was a tradition then that both the student and the tutor all wore the clerics’ dress. This was the case although there were a few exceptions. Most of the scholars’ way back then was in an order, this necessitated their wearing of gowns and hoods. Gradually the hoods got replaced by the skull cap.
Later in the future, precisely 1321, it was made compulsory by the Statue of University of Coimbra that all students, Master holders and the doctor are to use the academic wear. To avoid the discrimination and disparity that wears were causing, many of the university made it mandatory that all the academic regalia be use. This also included the doctors who had to wear their PhD Regalia, all the time. By the time Henry the Eight ascended the throne of England, the Universities of Cambridge and oxford have made a decree regarding the kind of wear that should be used in the University.
By this time there was no specific color for the graduation gowns, different faculties and different universities were all attributing different colors to their gowns and to their hoods. You could find on graduation day different colors of graduation stoles in one university. In 1985, the commission in the meetings made regulations to the color of the gowns. The regulation did not only affect the color of the gown but also how the gown were to be sown, the design, the style, the cut and even the material that were to be used for graduation gowns. It was also in this same year (1895) that colors were standardized. They were able to assign different colors to the various disciplines that were available.
When graduation arrives you have no choice in the matter concerning the graduation gown and the stoles to be used, but you can determine the under dress that you will wear underneath. The extent to which you also determine the under dress is also affected by the set down rules that are governing the academic regalia. As this event is a formal even, it will require that you wear something formal. There have been cases of grandaunts been disqualified and not allowed to take part in the graduation ceremony as a result of what they wore as under dress.
