The regulation did not only affect the color of the gown but also how the gown were to be sown, the design, the style, the cut and even the material that were to be used for graduation gowns. It was also in this same year (1895) that colors were standardized. They were able to assign different colors to the various disciplines that were available.
When graduation arrives you have no choice in the matter concerning the graduation gown and the stoles to be used, but you can determine the under dress that you will wear underneath. The extent to which you also determine the under dress is also affected by the set down rules that are governing the academic regalia.
